Hokusai's famous 'Great Wave' woodblock print was published in 1831 as part of his 36 views of Mount Fuji. He was working up to his death aged 88. Hokusai was an innovator and used perspective that he had observed in Western art and the new pigment Prussian blue, which came to Japan via Dutch traders in the 1820s.
