Brian McElney OBE, the founder of the Museum, was born in Hong Kong in the early 1930s. In his spare time, he also put together one of the most comprehensive collections of East Asian antiques in the world many of them spotted by him in his travels locally.
Initially interested in ceramics, Brian's collection grew with other objects made from other materials like metal, jade, bamboo and wood. His recall of each of the items he collected and the background of Hong Kong from the height of the Cultural Revolution in neighbouring mainland China makes a fascinating read.
