If you like lacquer objects in the museum here is a beautiful A5 notebook with striking foil floral design adapted from a Japanese writing box 1860 – 70. Velvet touch cover with coloured endpapers and gold foil gilt edging. 160 lined pages.
Such a lacquer box would contain calligraphy tools. Lacquer comes from the sap of the lacquer tree and is poisonous until it dries. Many layers are applied to a wood object and each layer takes days to dry. The lacquer is sprinkled with gold, silver or other metal using a special brush.
